Liposuction removes
fat from areas with concentrated, obvious amounts of
it. Common areas of treatments, areas usually hard
to treat through exercise and dieting alone, include
the thighs, hips, abdomen, chin, and neck.
The procedure, usually performed
on an outpatient basis under general or local anesthesia,
begins with a small incision. Through the incision,
your surgeon will insert a tubular instrument called
a cannula. In vacuum-like fashion, the unwanted fat
and liquids are removed through the cannula into a
machine at its opposing end.
Potential risks are
involved with any surgical procedure, and patients
should make themselves
aware of them when doing research. Liposuction is a
safe, routine procedure, but may involve infection
and bleeding, asymmetry, and rippling of skin.
The results of liposuction
can be permanent, however this depends on the patient's
post surgery lifestyle. Longer lasting results will
be present for patients who continue a healthy routine
of exercise and eating well.
